cplace Glossary

(Project-) Portfolio in Project Management

The term was originally used by artists for a sample of their work or a case used to display artwork. In economics, a portfolio is a stock of products, rights, etc. For example, the product portfolio compiles the products offered by the company or division.

A (project) portfolio is the entirety of all projects of a company at a specific time. It serves to coordinate the various important projects of the company. It is important that the projects are assigned to an organization and are relevant to each other (in terms of content, resource and order).
