In the corporate context, agility is defined as the ability of teams to respond quickly and flexibly to new (constantly changing) circumstances. In software development, &#8220;agile&#8221; is understood as an umbrella term for different agile methods (or frameworks) that have the common goal of reducing administrative effort while increasing performance. At the organizational level, the following attributes characterize an agile organization: adaptable, creative, innovative and learning. Being able to react quickly, actively and flexibly to changing circumstances and unforeseen events means that a company or team is agile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile working methods are also characterized by self-organization, as well as an iterative and incremental approach. The goals should be achieved with as little pre-planning and as few rules as possible. Changes should be addressed quickly, without increasing the risk of errors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specific approaches designed to implement agile principles in everyday work are known as agile methods. Regular meetings are held to share progress, discuss problems and work together on solutions. The teams work independently and are self-organized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Transparency: <\/strong>Agile methods promote open communication, supported by specific tools (e.g. Kanban boards). The most important methods are presented below:<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col col-12 snk-textColumn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"snk-textBlock snk-textBlock_slim\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>1. Scrum<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/scrum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scrum<\/a> is an agile project management framework that originally emerged from software development. It has since gained popularity in many other industries and is used for a wide variety of projects. Scrum is based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/agiles-manifest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agile Manifesto<\/a> and involves short sprints and the incorporation of feedback. The method supports an agile, incremental, and iterative approach with short iterations and flat hierarchies. Specific roles, events, and work items are defined within the framework.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Elements of Scrum:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Sprint Planning: <\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">At the beginning of a sprint, each team member determines which items from the backlog they will work on (Sprint Poker).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/sprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sprints<\/em><\/a>: <span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">These are predefined work units (often two to four weeks long) -&gt; at the end the results are presented.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/daily-stand-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Daily Standup Meetings<\/em>:<\/a> <span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">These meetings occur once per day and last about 15 minutes. They serve as a time for updates and discussions about what tasks are planned for the day.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Sprint Review: <\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">A presentation of the results takes place at the end of each sprint.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Sprint- Retroperspective<\/em>: <span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">These meetings are held at the end of each sprint to discuss what went well and what could be improved.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Roles in Scrum:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Scrum team typically consists of a maximum of 10 people and includes three defined roles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/product-owner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Product Owner: <\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">The primary responsibility of the Product Owner is to maximize the product&#8217;s value. Additionally, they are responsible for analyzing business, customer and market requirements and managing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/product-roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Product Backlog<\/a>. This role serves as the sole link between the development team and the stakeholders. In traditional organizations, this role is often called Product Manager.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Scrum Master: <\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">The Scrum Master creates optimal working conditions and supports the self-organization of the teams. Their responsibility lies in improving the team&#8217;s environment and work processes. Additionally, the Scrum Master facilitates the daily standup meetings, as well as sprint planning, review, and retrospective.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Scrum Team:<\/em>\u00a0The development team is responsible for implementation and quality, ensuring that the product is delivered in alignment with the requirements of the Product Backlog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col col-12 snk-textColumn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"snk-textBlock snk-textBlock_slim\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>2. Kanban<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agile method Kanban has its origins in the Japanese automotive industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/kanban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kanban<\/a> is a simpler agile framework that is based on visual boards, where tasks are represented as cards. Kanban boards have various columns, such as &#8220;In Progress&#8221; and &#8220;Completed.&#8221; The cards can be moved within the board. The cards are drawn by the subsequent units in the process (pull principle) and not pushed to them. Each work stage has a predefined limit on the number of tasks that can be placed there (Work-in-Progress limits). This flexible approach helps to manage tasks efficiently. The project\u2019s progress is always visible and clearly presented to all team members.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to other agile methods, Kanban emphasizes a continuous workflow rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/iteration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iterations<\/a>. This agile method helps to improve the visualization of the workflow. The boards promote transparency, which helps in identifying bottlenecks early and preventing overloads. As a result, productivity can be improved, and the process is accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Elements of a Kanban Board: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><em>Kanban <\/em><\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\"><em>cards:<\/em> These cards document specific tasks and activities and are placed on the board accordingly. Different colors can be used to clarify the priority or status of the task.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><em>Kanban <\/em><\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\"><em>columns<\/em>: The various stages of the workflow (e.g., To Do, In Progress, Review) are visualized through different columns. Each stage of the process has its own column and the cards move through these phases sequentially.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\"><em style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">Kanban Swimlanes: <\/em><\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">These horizontal lanes help structure different tasks and can visually distinguish between teams if necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Work-in-Progress-Limits (WIP-Limits):\u00a0<\/em>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\">The number of tasks is limited in order to avoid overload. This allows teams to focus on the tasks that are currently important. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><em>Pull system: <\/em><\/em><span style=\"font-size: var(--snk-fs-p);\">Work is not assigned (as in a push system); instead, teams pull tasks as they have the capacity to do so. The workflow is thus managed in a self-organized manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col col-12 snk-textColumn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"snk-textBlock snk-textBlock_slim\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>3. Lean<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principle of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cplace.com\/en\/glossary\/lean-enterprise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lean Management<\/a>&#8221; describes approaches that aim to streamline processes and organizations. These processes are minimized to be more adaptable and to avoid unnecessary obstacles and slow workflows for employees or companies. With the lean method, the focus is placed on the essential work processes. The main goal of this method is to achieve value creation without wasting resources. Accordingly, the maximum benefit for the customer should be achieved using as few resources as possible (personnel, costs, time). The customer plays an important role in this approach and is consistently involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lean method is based on two key aspects: Cost reduction and customer orientation. The five fundamental principles of Lean Management are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Customer focus:<\/em> As previously mentioned, the customer&#8217;s perspective plays a crucial role in this method. The specific values must be identified and analyzed to understand what is valuable to the customer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Identification of the value stream:<\/em> The entire process should be analyzed and all waste eliminated to ensure an efficient value stream.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Improvement of workflow:<\/em> The workflow should be continuously optimized to avoid waste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Pull system:<\/em> The pull principle is also applied here, as tasks are coordinated and completed based on demand. Customer needs play a significant role in this process as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Continuous improvement:<\/em> The Lean Management approach is an iterative process. Continuous efforts should be made to improve and adapt processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col col-12 snk-textColumn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"snk-textBlock snk-textBlock_slim\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>4. Design Thinking<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Design Thinking method promotes creative problem solving and innovative ideas and therefore also serves as a solution for more complex problems. It is mainly used during the idea generation process or to find solutions to specific challenges. Even if the design sprints tend to be held in a workshop format, Design Thinking is one of the most important agile methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Process and Elements of Design Thinking:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical design sprint usually lasts five days and is completed in one iteration. An interdisciplinary team goes through the following six steps during the design sprint:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Building up understanding:<\/strong> The first step is to understand and define the challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. User observation:<\/strong> The users are observed and become acquainted with them in initial interviews. Customer priorities should be analyzed and understood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Definition of the point of view<\/strong>: Based in the observations, a point of view and conceptual framework can now be defined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Brainstorming:<\/strong> During this step, ideas are generated and sketched that could lead to a solution to the problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Modeling (Prototype):<\/strong> Prototypes are created for the best ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Testing:<\/strong> The prototypes are tested with customers and feedback is gathered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process is repeated until a suitable solution is found. Design Thinking is therefore based on iteration, cross-team collaboration and quick adaptability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\t\n\n\t<section class=\"snk-section snk-section_slimOnSingle snk-section_noTop\" id='reasons'>\n\t\t<div class=\"container container-sm\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"snk-section-headline\">Reasons Why Companies Should Use Agile Methods<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"row snk-textColumns\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col col-12 snk-textColumn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"snk-textBlock snk-textBlock_slim\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today\u2019s work environment, flexibility and adaptability are crucial factors for long-term success and staying competitive. Agile methods enable companies to collaboratively work towards well-defined goals. In addition, the focus is on customer needs and unforeseeable changes can be responded to more quickly. This means that potential issues can be identified and addressed early on. With the help of feedback loops, customer feedback is implemented more quickly, leading to higher quality products and services.
